

Although Anti is a darker, more downbeat album devoid of club bangers, "historically, Rihanna is a singles-driven artist, so I have no doubt there will be more" after Work, says Dee Lockett, an associate editor at Vulture, who suggests Kiss It Better and Needed Me as strong possibilities. With her sprawling Anti World Tour in North America, Rihanna should continue to be red-hot. "It also speaks to her savviness in marketing herself." By releasing a handful of singles last year and staying active on social media, "it didn't feel like she ever went away."

The reception "speaks a lot to the loyalty and patience of her fans," says Yahoo Music managing editor Lyndsey Parker. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart (after 2012's Unapologetic), but it also spawned her Drake-assisted single Work, which has topped the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks and is her 14th No. The numbers are even more impressive considering that Rihanna gave away 1 million album downloads and streamed it exclusively on Tidal for one week. In the seven weeks since its rush release, Anti has notched 275 million Spotify streams and sold 279,000 copies, according to Nielsen Music. But what once seemed like a botched rollout has become a triumph for the Barbadian pop star, sharply contrasting the missteps of her Famous collaborator Kanye West with his Tidal exclusive, The Life of Pablo. Since its relaunch last year, the Jay Z-owned streaming service has caught flak for fumbling the releases of its A-list backers - most recently, Rihanna's long-awaited Anti, which was leaked on the platform in late January. Tidal's spotty track record isn't just a thing of Saturday Night Live sketches.
